Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a linear polymer with the chemical formula (C3H5NO)n. It is a hard glassy solid at room temperature. Its products include glue, latex, white powder, translucent beads and flakes. It has good thermal stability. It can be dissolved in water in any proportion, and the aqueous solution is a uniform and transparent liquid. After long-term storage, the viscosity of the solution will decrease due to the slow degradation of the polymer, especially when the storage and transportation conditions are poor. Polyacrylamide is widely used in drilling, acidizing, fracturing, water plugging, cementing, secondary oil recovery and tertiary oil recovery as a lubricant, suspending agent, clay stabilizer, oil displacement agent, fluid loss reducer and thickener. It is an extremely important oilfield chemical.

Application

Water treatment field
Water treatment includes raw water treatment, sewage treatment and industrial water treatment. In raw water treatment, it can be used in combination with activated carbon to condense and clarify suspended particles in domestic water. Using organic flocculant acrylamide instead of inorganic flocculant can increase the water purification capacity by more than 20% even without modifying the sedimentation tank. In sewage treatment, the use of polyacrylamide can increase the utilization rate of water reuse and recycling, and can also be used for sludge dewatering. It is used as an important formula agent in industrial water treatment. The largest application area of polyacrylamide abroad is water treatment, and its application in this field is being promoted in China. The main functions of polyacrylamide in water treatment: [2]
(1) Reduce the amount of flocculant. On the premise of achieving the same water quality, polyacrylamide can be used as a coagulant in combination with other flocculants to greatly reduce the amount of flocculant used; (2) Improve water quality. In drinking water treatment and industrial wastewater treatment, polyacrylamide can be used in combination with inorganic flocculants to significantly improve water quality; (3) Improve floc strength and sedimentation rate. The flocs formed by polyacrylamide have high strength and good sedimentation performance, thereby increasing the solid-liquid separation rate and facilitating sludge dewatering; (4) Anti-corrosion and anti-scaling of circulating cooling systems. The use of polyacrylamide can greatly reduce the amount of inorganic flocculants used, thereby avoiding the deposition of inorganic substances on the surface of the equipment and slowing down the corrosion and scaling of the equipment. Application in oil production
Polyacrylamide is a multifunctional oilfield chemical treatment agent that is widely used in oil drilling, cementing, completion, well repair, fracturing, acidizing, water injection, water plugging and profile control, and tertiary oil recovery operations, especially in the fields of drilling, water plugging and profile control, and tertiary oil recovery. Polyacrylamide aqueous solution has a high viscosity and has good thickening, flocculation and rheological adjustment effects. It is used as an oil displacement agent and drilling mud conditioner in oil production. In the middle and late stages of oil production, in order to improve crude oil recovery, my country currently mainly promotes polymer flooding and ternary composite flooding technologies. By injecting polyacrylamide aqueous solution, the oil-water flow rate ratio is improved, and the crude oil content in the produced material is increased. Adding polyacrylamide to tertiary oil recovery can increase oil displacement capacity, avoid oil layer penetration, and improve oil bed recovery rate. China's petroleum industry is the largest user of polyacrylamide. The technological progress of polyacrylamide has promoted the development of China's petroleum industry, and the demand of the petroleum industry has accelerated the pace of technological innovation of polyacrylamide and the development of the industry. Papermaking field
In the papermaking field, polyacrylamide is widely used as a retention agent, filter aid, and uniformity agent to improve the quality of paper, slurry dewatering performance, retention rate of fine fibers and fillers, reduce raw material consumption and environmental pollution, and as a dispersant, it can improve the uniformity of paper. Polyacrylamide is mainly used in two aspects in the papermaking industry. One is to increase the retention rate of fillers, pigments, etc. to reduce the loss of raw materials and pollution to the environment; the other is to improve the strength of paper. Adding polyacrylamide to paper stock can increase the retention rate of fine fibers and filler particles on the net and accelerate the dehydration of paper stock. The mechanism of action of polyacrylamide is that the particles in the slurry are retained on the filter cloth by flocculation through electrical neutralization or bridging. The formation of flocs can also make it easier to filter out the water in the slurry, reduce the loss of fibers in white water, reduce environmental pollution, and help improve the efficiency of equipment such as filtration and precipitation. Medical materials
Polyacrylamide gel can be used as a non-prothrombin granulating agent, surgical, contact lens raw material, outer coating material of microcapsules, and used to manufacture high-quality hemostatic plugs, sanitary napkins and diapers for children. Polyacrylamide with a particle size of several hundred microns to several tens of microns can be used as chromatographic fillers (such as gel chromatography column fillers) to effectively separate globular proteins such as cytochromes. It can also further desalt and concentrate proteins. Polyacrylamide resin is subjected to the Mannich reaction to introduce L-proline or L-hydroxyproline on the amide side chain through a methylene bridge, and then coordinated with copper ions to obtain a chiral ligand resin, which effectively separates a series of DL-amino acids. The chiral amino acids of the polyvinylamine resin obtained by Hofmann degradation are then complexed with copper ions and used as the stationary phase of ligand exchange chromatography to separate a series of amino acids, especially aromatic amino acids. Due to the strong hydrophilicity of the skeleton, the separation time is greatly shortened. [2]
Other industries
In the food industry, it is used for cane juice clarification and syrup phosphorus flotation extraction in the production of cane sugar and beet sugar. The recovered protein powder has no adverse effects on the survival rate, weight gain and egg production of chickens. It is also used for synthetic resin coatings, civil engineering grouting materials, building materials industry, improving cement quality, construction industry adhesives, caulking repair and water blocking agents, soil improvement, electroplating industry, printing and dyeing industry, etc.
Usage characteristics

3. Resistance reduction: PAM can effectively reduce the friction resistance of fluids. Adding a small amount of PAM to water can reduce resistance by 50-80%.
4. Thickening: PAM has a thickening effect under neutral and acid conditions. When the pH value is above 10, PAM is easily hydrolyzed. When it is in a semi-net structure, the thickening will be more obvious.
