Butyl acetate is slightly soluble in water and miscible with general organic solvents such as alcohol and ether. Compared with the lower homologues, butyl acetate is insoluble in water and difficult to hydrolyze. However, under the action of acid or alkali, it is hydrolyzed to generate acetic acid and butanol. Butyl acetate is the most important medium volatile solvent in the coatings industry.
